Evolution of Clothing Brand Cassandra Elizabeth and New Direction

We recently spoke to Toronto clothing designer Cassandra Burrell regarding what she describes as the transition from a “young” brand to a universal clothing line. Her enthusiasm is contagious when she talks about an anticipated August launch (pre-orders accepted as of August 1st) for the latest additions to her “Cassandra Elizabeth” clothes. These new pieces are a key milestone in this brand’s evolution, with her vision to flatter a wider audience and ignore the seasons.

Read  her backstory here: Cassandra Elizabeth Designs Eco-Friendly Clothing for Busy Women.

Cassandra Elizabeth Canadian Clothing Brand

A Capsule Collection

Burrell believes that it is time to take her designs “to the next level” while maintaining her basic goals of any size and any season. There are a total of eight (8) new Cassandra Elizabeth pieces.  The new clothing includes three (3) sweaters, three (3) T-shirts and two (2) pants. Described as a capsule collection that will cover everything you need for wardrobe basics. The pieces are all neutral foundations (black and heather grey).

Sustainable fabrics, Bamboo and Tencel, factor in the new Cassandra Elizabeth pieces. However, Burrell is also adding hemp and cotton as textiles used in her clothes.  She continually vets her Canadian-based fabric suppliers for their eco-friendly manufacturing practices.  One such example is Burrell’s choice to select a bamboo that is broken down mechanically rather than chemically, a cost differential she feels is worth it for the environment long term.

The new Cassandra Elizabeth collection promises to offer a relaxed fit without appearing slouchy. The pieces can be worn individually or layered to change a look or adjust for the seasons. Burrell has designed for every age group while offering a universal fit and maintaining a minimal aesthetic. She shared this, “I love seeing how people accessorize my clothing.”

A Universal Brand

The launch date of early August is intentional. The objective is for the Cassandra Elizabeth patterns to navigate seasonal changes as a year-round collection. Burrell shared that she began working on this project in February (2017) and to launch date, it will be seven (7) months. A quick turnaround for any designer. According to this Burrell, the scheduling is perfect as it reinforces her brand’s universality (all ages, all seasons, all bodies) and it allows her Toronto-based manufacturers to collaborate with her in their slower periods.

Due to changes in her production process these items are no longer available on Atelier, but please visit her website to place your orders. We will continue to follow the Cassandra Elizabeth creative journey and fashion direction.

Clothing designer Cassandra Burrell explored the fashion communities on both Canadian coasts. The Halifax native tells us that she moved to Vancouver for artistic inspiration after graduation from New Brunswick’s College of Craft and Design. During university, Burrell’s acquaintances began ordering custom dresses, reinforcement of her focus towards a career in fashion design.

Burrell describes both coastal cities as beautiful yet entirely different. Where Vancouver is brand conscious and trendy, her hometown of Halifax has a reputation for supporting local designers. After opening her first bricks and mortar store in Halifax, Burrell has settled in Toronto; Canada’s largest city and the hotbed of the fashion industry.

Eco-friendly Women’s Clothing

Cassandra Elizabeth Designs are minimalist styles, inspired by her friends’ personalities and in many cases named after those same people. Burrell’s interest in fashion began at an early age. However, it was designing exclusive clothing for her network that gave her the impetus to launch the Cassandra Elizabeth Designs brand. Burrell’s first fashion show was entirely one-of-a-kind cocktail dresses (sold for charity). She tells us that “I love evening wear and hope to keep this a large part of my brand as it grows.”

Suitable for a broad audience, Cassandra Burrell designs for practical wear. Cassandra Elizabeth clothing is crafted with eco-friendly, long-lasting fabrics including Tencel, bamboo, linen, silk and hemp. Burrell is clear that she only uses textiles if she is confident that the supplier processes fabric in a way that limits harm to the environment.

Next up for Cassandra Elizabeth Designs?

Near term: “I am already working on the Fall 2017 Collection. It is full of neutral tones, clean silhouettes and one pop of colour! You will have to wait to see which one.”

Longer term: More Canadian boutiques in the next few years.

The practical Maris Dress made with bamboo cloth is best described as free-flowing, comfortable and easy to wear. The non-wrinkle fabric is perfect for travel or a long day at work. This understated dress will look just as good as it did when you put it on in the morning.

Farrah Tunic in Bamboo Fabric Side

Farrah is a longer tunic style dress with a geometrical hemline. An “easy to throw on” design allows you to wear this dress without looking like you are drowning in fabric.

Shauna Bamboo T-Shirt

These two easy-to-wear bamboo tops are certainly wardrobe essentials. The Shauna Top is that “go-to” t-shirt when you just want to make dull look attractive. The Lacey Tee is a mid-length top designed for comfortable wearing with leggings or jeans, so functional you might want to buy it in both colours.

Elegant Hand Knit Designs for Modern Women by Cindy Goble

Cindy Goble did not exactly “fall” into her trade, she is the third generation in a family of knitters, but she is certainly focused on establishing GŌBLE as a luxury women’s fashion brand. Based in London, Ontario, Cindy Goble’s heritage is a mix of German and Lithuanian. Goble was taught to knit by her mother, and she has successfully imparted her artistic skills to her daughter Grace.

GŌBLE knitwear expresses the very essence of the lifestyle that Cindy Goble hopes her customers can live – effortless and comfortable. Goble’s designs are inspired by the seasons in Canada and intended for women who want to transition from busy days (office, kids, programs) to weekends and downtime with ease.

The brand’s designs are the result of Cindy Goble’s visions, and a team of qualified knitters work under Goble’s exacting guidance. Handcrafted in Canada the GŌBLE production uses natural (never synthetic) wool and other fibres sourced locally or from reputable suppliers in England and South America.

Using a soft wool blend of merino, alpaca, silk and mohair the GŌBLE slouchy hat is playful and comfortable. This toque speaks to the weekend when life is just a bit more relaxed and not too serious.

Admittedly, the worst winter weather can be difficult to shrug off, but GŌBLE’s Infinity Shawl is a fail-safe way to ward off the cold. The luxurious combination of woollen threads is spun into this top that measures 20” in length. Trimmed with sheared beaver this shawl will be a wardrobe piece that your best friends will beg you to borrow.

The classic cable knit stitch never goes out of style, GŌBLE’s cowl neck and hat are practical wardrobe pieces you will quickly discover are hard to live without.

Moving into warmer weather and lighter days the GŌBLE silk chiffon scarf is a showstopper.

With Cindy Goble at the helm of the brand and her daughter Grace in the wings (she will increase her role in the company once her studies are complete), the GŌBLE brand is poised to vault onto the global fashion scene.

What are the 5 Good Reasons to Buy a Cashmere Sweater

A few years back I was invited on a girls’ trip — massages, pedicures, shopping and cocktail bars. Wrong! We were hiking.

What to pack for a long walk on the Camino de Santiago? The resounding answer was a cashmere sweater. The group was headed to walk a section of the Camino Frances starting at the French-Spanish border and over a six-day period we would cover about 120 kilometres.

As our departure date loomed the email volume escalated (the group was not exactly “What’s App” savvy at the time). Well past our youth hostel days, we chose a self-guided, partially supported pilgrim tour. In other words, we had engaged a service to move our bags from one destination to the next, and to book our accommodation. Yes, I admit we were doing a bit of a “princess” tour and thrilled we had picked that option when our first three days were rain-filled downpours that would have made Noah proud.

Here, are five (of many) reasons you should own a cashmere sweater:

It is a natural fibre – Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of Cashmere goats that have been bred to produce the hair in greater quantities. Think of this filament as the fleece layer that you put on when the weather gets cooler. The cashmere belly-layer is “harvested” when the animals begin shedding, typically in the spring (May-June). The cashmere is combed or sheared (less desirable) and sent to a de-hairing facility to remove the coarse hairs. Only then, is the fibre ready to be spun into yarn.

It is not itchy – Unlike sheep wool,  the cashmere fibres are separated by hand from the coarse outer hairs leaving a soft, downy textile. This time-consuming process is manual, but the result is well worth the effort for the wearer. Did you know that it takes, four-six goats to produce enough fibre for one sweater?

A perfect travel companion – Honestly, who doesn’t like linen, but for backpack travel talk about wrinkles! Cashmere, it can be folded, rolled, stuffed and it still looks perfect.

Lightweight – Have you ever put on a wool sweater to get rid of a chill, only to feel weighed down? Cashmere is eight times warmer than sheep’s wool, yet significantly lighter.

You deserve it. Is there is a favourite sweater (or two) in your closet, the one with threadbare elbows? It’s time to buy a new one. A high-quality cashmere garment made with longer hairs that have only been combed (not sheared) should never have the annoying tiny pills on your sweater.
